What is Cognitivism?

Wikipedia from Web -
, wikipedia: Wikipedia
The word cognitivism is used in several ways:

# In psychology, cognitivism is the approach to understanding the mind which argues that mental function can be understood as the 'internal' rule-bound manipulation of symbols. ~ See Cognitivism (psychology).

# In psychology, anecdotal cognitivism is a methodology for interpreting animal behavior in terms of mental states, comparable to the mental states of humans. ~ For example, the methodology attempts to determine the cognitive capacity of animals through observation without the necessity that this observation be regulated or controlled as in an experiment; however, behavior in an experiment can be interpreted using the methodology.

# Cognition - the study of the human mind (not brain).

Aside from Wiki has to say to what Cognitivism really is?

Cognitivism is the psychology of learning which emphasizes human cognition or intelligence as a special endowment enabling mean to form hypotheses and develop intellectually.

Is this a new word? There are only three 2 site who defined this term. Two are from Wiki and the other is on the link. Maybe physical books in libraries has more to say about Cognitivism.

Ahhh, the mind. A facinating thing it is. There are so many mysteries yet to be solved.

The study of the mind itself is non-exhaustive. I beg to differ with you Dave; there are about 100, 000 findings online.

Many theories have been put across to explain it but it still remains very diverse. The topic of Cognitivism is not new. In fact, the cognitivist revolution replaced behaviorism in 1960s as the dominant paradigm.

Cognitivism focuses on the inner mental activities. Opening the “black box” of the human mind is valuable and necessary for understanding how people learn. Mental processes such as thinking, memory, knowing, and problem-solving need to be

explored. Knowledge can be seen as schema or symbolic mental constructions. Learning is defined as change in a learner’s schemata.

A response to behaviorism, people are not “programmed animals” that merely respond to environmental stimuli; people are rational beings that require active participation in order to learn, and whose actions are a consequence of thinking. Changes in behavior are observed, but only as an indication of what is occurring in the learner’s head.

Cognitivism uses the metaphor of the mind as computer: information comes in, is being processed, and leads to certain outcomes.

There are ever two sides to everything;the old adage puts it nicely, 'there always two sides of a coin.' What it means therefore is that to everything, the big question is, 'do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?' Is the cognitive theory unique in any way? Is it so much of a popular phenomenon?

Thanks, cewemoy. You explained it it simple terms.

It would interest me who wants to know this and why? Are you studying psychology? Or is this a cognitive test for the blog readers?

Are we all cognitive guinea-pigs?

There's also a cognitive therapy that was used by psychologist to understand the root of moods and distinguish some mental ailments in some individuals. They interact with the patients to let them vent out their inner feelings as well as trace the cause of the issue and help them with a solution. For me, it's better than a pill because it doesn't have any side effects like the one that we usually get form medicines and sometimes we only need someone to hear our problems and we are okay afterwards.

@ Natascha, interestingly, there will be people who will find the whole cognitive theory interesting. In my own view, unless you are a psychology major in college or are seeking to make a career out of psychology as a whole, this should not really interest you. However, studying this with the sole aim of gathering knowledge seems intriguing. And talking of cognitive therapy.....

yeah..It's like, the thoughts that are running in your mind is being studied. Psychologist or Psychiatrist use cognitive therapy to their patients to trace up the root cause of their behavior.

It is something that has been around the globe for quite some time now, as mentioned, and most definitely, it is certainly being studied much more in depth now, than it were ever possible to have done, on previous occasions.

I firmly do not believe in psychology nor psychiatry, actually. In fact, I am a firm believer in the theory that society molds their problems. Look inside of the jail, and one can see the very embodiment of society in itself.

This is undeniably true, my heart would it be surely towards the recommendation of what one may describe, as being affairs of a psychological nature.

psychology is easy to understand and to communicate, but is it really worth bothering with? are those people really as smart as they may think themselves to be.

"Society molds their problems", this phrase kinda intrigues me. I know that society plays a big role on how we are living. But to not believe in psychology and psychiatry, I think I have to disagree on that. Because through this kind of sciences we are able to understand how those people thinks and why they think that way. But anyway, we are entitled to what we believe. Have a good day.
