What is an addiction?

Thank author of this post/commentThis is a very far reaching term involving many things. Can anyone clarify some items for me? I would appreciate any such clarification.

First of, is an addiction a behaviour problems or is it in our genes?

The answer to this is very important because, depending on the response, those guys in detox wards and jails all over the world choose through their bahaviour to be addicts - inadequate socializing -, they are sociopaths, or they are conditioned by their genes.

Plus, there are many levels and types of addictions. Is addiction to comic books in the same sphere as addiction to morphine?

The task of defining addiction has challenged physicians, judges, clergy, addicts, their families, and the general public throughout history. There are as many potential definitions as there are groups with an interest in defining addiction. These definitions emphasize such things as physiological dependence, psychological dependence, family dynamics, behavioral problems, and morality. This list could be expanded at length, and NA could come up with its own definition and add it to the list. Fortunately, Tradition Ten steers us away from such public debates. Clearly, debating such issues is not NA's task. Our task is to carry the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers.

No matter how people define it, addiction definitely would bring nothing but trouble to us. For it is so hard to be living with something you just got hooked with.

And so it is important that we do know how to control ourselves. Control in a sense that we know our limitations for everything that we enjoy. Because if we do exceed to what is 'acceptable', then we are considered as addicts.
